This 8 week study takes a more comprehensive approach than the typical westward expansion unit. Delve into a wide variety of the ways, means and reasons for the westward expansion of America - from the Pony Express and the Goldrush, to the mountain men and the missionaries, to the orphan trains and the wagon trains. Students will map out various trails to the west, chart a timeline of the various means, gain an understanding for the difficulties of life in those early days of western living, discuss the impact on the native peoples, and summarize the overall benefits and repercussions of America's expansion. This unit is aimed at middle to upper elementary students, but younger students and middle schoolers will benefit greatly as well. This product is an electronic download.
